Types of Research

Carrots, grown in our test beds, harvested for research

Our scientists' goal is to gain a detailed understanding of the underlying biochemical components, physiological activities, and population health applications of whole food supplements. Our scientists meet this goal by performing discovery science and clinical research.

Discovery Science Research

Discovery Science is conducted using powerful analytical techniques including high-pressure liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, and mass spectral detection to identify, quantify, and analyze key chemical markers within whole food ingredients. Using plants grown in experimental test plots at our farm, our scientists determine which plant varieties will survive and grow in our climate and then harvest to maximize nutrient content.

Further experiments using multiple laboratory models such as mammalian cell culture, biochemical assays, and measurement of gene expression using real-time PCR are used to document the biological activity of individual ingredients and finished products in cell culture systems.

We use this approach to expand our understanding of Standard Process materials and are always working to inform practitioners, patients, and the scientific community about our findings through the publication of peer-reviewed journal articles, presentations at international scientific conferences and through informational communications.

Clinical Research

Clinical Research at Standard Process is committed to supporting research on whole foods and whole food-derived dietary supplements through collaborative relationships with conventional and complementary research and educational institutions. This allows us to evaluate the effectiveness of new and existing whole food supplements in large populations of patients, and seeks to establish relationships between supplements and improved health. We are also dedicated to providing quality educational materials to help clinical practitioners document the effect of dietary supplements to their patients. To meet this challenge, clinical research has committed funding to support scientists investigating whole food nutritional research in an annual pilot clinical research program.
