Organic Farming Methods
The Standard Process Farm is certified by MOSA (Midwest Organic Services Association)
We keep detailed records of our farming practices, and annually monitor our farmland and processing facility to ensure that only the highest quality farming techniques are practiced.
Farming Techniques
Seeds
All of the seeds that we use are untreated and free of genetically modified organisms (GMO). We use certified organic seeds when available.
Irrigation
Irrigation water is supplied from a naturally occurring artesian flowage over 500 feet below the farm's surface.
Weed Control
Crop flamer
Organic weed control standards are strictly adhered to at the Standard Process Farm. The main methods of weed management include:
- Cultivating
- Mowing
- Hand weeding
- Cover crops - used for weed prevention and as a source of nitrogen and organic matter
- Crop flamer - used to eliminate the last flush of weeds before vegetable emergence
Spreading beet pulp waste
Eco-sensitive Processing
After the nutrients have been extracted from the raw materials, the majority of biodegradable by-products are returned to the fields in a monitored, land-spreading program.
Environmental Buffers
Our farm is surrounded on all sides by environmental buffers to minimize the impact of non-agricultural land and chemical inputs from traditional farming practices.
