August 2006 News From The Farm SP News Article
Christine Mason,
Farm Manager
On June 29, Wisconsin farmers considering a transition to organic production visited the SP Farm for a day-long "Introduction to Organic Certification" workshop organized by Midwest Organic and Sustainable Education Services (MOSES) and the University of Wisconsin Cooperative Extension. Workshop participants learned about vegetable and row crop production practices, crop rotations, cultivation, field management techniques, and types of equipment used for commercial organic farming.
On August 16, a group of people from the United States Department of Agriculture's Sustainable Agricultural Research and Education (SARE) program will be coming for a tour.
SARE requested that a tour of the SP Farm be a part of their national convention taking place August 15-17 in southeastern Wisconsin. SARE has awarded more the $30 million in competitive grants to individuals or groups "exploring sustainable agriculture." On the SARE website, they state that their goals for this region are to:Foster site-specific, integrated farming systems; satisfy human food and fiber needs; enhance environmental quality, natural resource conservation and the integration of on-farm and biological resources; enhance the quality of rural life and support owner-operated farms; protect human health and safety; and promote crop, livestock and enterprise diversity and the well-being of animals.Sounds like a good fit with many of our philosophies!
