We have some exciting public service opportunities at the farm this growing season. We will be participating with the University of Wisconsin in a study on flame weeding. This study will be part of the Integrated Weed Management initiative. We will experiment with different flame timings based on crop maturity versus cultivating. We will then evaluate crop damage and final yield. I am very pleased that the university is taking a closer look into more sustainable practices.

On June 29, the Midwest Organic Sustainable Education Service (MOSES) and the University of Wisconsin will be co-hosting an educational presentation for any conventional grower (a farmer currently using pesticides and commercial fertilizers) who is interested in transitioning into a more sustainable way of farming or, better yet, taking the big leap and transitioning to organic production. The all-day session will explain several of the concepts and practices of organic farming. The entire group will visit Standard Process to tour a working, organic farm. I think that this is an excellent opportunity to share Dr. Lee's passion for organics. Seeing is believing, and with a little luck, we can help move American agriculture back to a more sustainable foundation, even if it is only one grower at a time.

It is a large and generous commitment on the DuBois' part to allow us to participate in these public service events. If a person were ever to be impressed with an organic farm, I think that they would be impressed with this one. We have a beautiful setting and our soils and crops are both in healthy shape. Of course, our most important opportunity to share the farm occurs when customers come to town.
