Purchasing Organic Seeds
February 2006 News From The Farm SP News Article
Christine Mason,
Farm Manager
If you are a home gardener, you already have a mailbox and a coffee table full of garden catalogs. I thought that I would share with you several of the companies that I have had luck with for my home garden.
Peaceful Valley Farm & Garden Supply
www.groworganic.com or (888) 784-1722
Based out of California, this company has been promoting organic gardening and farming since 1976. I like this catalog because it carries many useful supplies as well as one of the widest selections of organic varieties you will ever find in one catalog.
Seeds of Change
www.seedsofchange.com or (888) 762-7333
This company is another option that offers 100% organic seed. They are based out of New Mexico and they offer a nice selection of unique varieties and heirloom seeds. I always use something from Seeds of Change.
Wild Garden Seed
www.wildgardenseed.com or (541) 929-4068
I kind of stumbled across this company by accident and I really love what I have purchased from them. If you are interested in growing any leafy greens, I encourage you to try this company.
Sometimes it takes a little more effort to order seed organically, but I believe it is important to support companies that are striving to give us organic biodiversity. Control of seed is control of life, and the vast majority of all seed in the world is now controlled by a small handful of bioengineering companies (Monsanta, Syngenta, DuPont, etc). It costs more money to produce seed organically, and it usually involves more effort. I encourage everyone with a home garden to find organic seed and help support the companies that are striving to maintain heirloom varieties (like Seeds of Change) and naturally selected varieties (like Wild Garden Seed). To me, diversity in our seed banks is critical to our future.
