Standard Process Inc. Awards First Dr. Michael Dobbins Scholarship at Life West's Spring for Life Seminar
PALMYRA, Wis. (May 18, 2010)–Standard Process Inc. recently named James Hartman Andersen as the first recipient of the Dr. Michael Dobbins Excellence in Nutritional Education Scholarship. Andersen received a $10,000 scholarship during Life Chiropractic College West's annual Spring for Life seminar opening event on May 13.
Standard Process created the scholarship to encourage students to study whole food nutrition while pursuing their degrees in alternative health care. Andersen, a 7th quarter student at Life West, was selected for his essay on how he would incorporate nutritional therapy into an alternative health care practice.
"Developing improved nutrition support programs at the collegiate level is the key to securing the future of alternative health care," said Mary Beth Larsen, D.C., Standard Process chiropractic relations manager. "That is why we are invested in helping students who are interested in implementing nutritional services into their future practices."
In addition to the essay, scholarship applicants need to:
- Have a grade point average of 2.9 or higher
- Have at least three quarters remaining before graduation
- Provide a list of their contributions to the profession, the college, and the community
- Provide a letter of recommendation from a professor at the school.
In 2009, Standard Process established the Excellence in Nutritional Education Award to honor nutrition educators who have dedicated themselves to educating fellow practitioners, students, and patients about the value of combining alternative therapies and whole food supplements to help maintain a healthy lifestyle. In addition to the award, Standard Process announced a $100,000 scholarship program that would be provided to the award recipient's alma mater.
Chiropractor Michael Dobbins, of Alameda, Calif., was the first recipient of the Excellence in Nutritional Education Award. A scholarship was then set up in his honor at his alma mater, Life Chiropractic College West. The Dr. Michael Dobbins Excellence in Nutritional Education Scholarship will provide $10,000 to a selected Life student each year for the next 10 years.
