Standard Process Welcomes Interns To Research & Development Lab
PALMYRA, Wisconsin (July 8, 2009) — Standard Process Inc., manufacturer of nutritional whole food supplements, welcomes interns Katie Caillouette and Brian Kuklinski to its Research and Development Internship Program. Caillouette and Kuklinski are students at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (UW-Whitewater).
Through the company's internship program, students learn first-hand what it is like to work in a research lab, and have a great opportunity to develop their skills in analytical chemistry and molecular biology.
Kuklinski (biology major, chemistry minor) looks forward to the career experience, saying, "In class we learn the principles behind something and in the lab I get to apply it. This gives extra meaning to the work I do at school."
Caillouette graduated this year with degrees in biology and psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison). She is pursuing her teaching licensure at UW-Whitewater and chose this internship to prepare for a teaching position—"I wanted to work in the lab and experience firsthand the material I'll be teaching my students."
The internship program started in 2001. Twelve students from four colleges, including UW-Whitewater, UW-Madison, Madison Area Technical College, and Hillsdale College in Michigan, have participated in the program.
Manager of Discovery Science and internship coordinator, Dr. Paul Hanlon, is proud of the internship program and the value it brings to both Standard Process and the interns. "Even if they don't become research scientists, I hope the time spent in our lab taught them something about the scientific process, how to critically evaluate problems they may come across, and also exposed them to the fact that Standard Process is really putting a lot of effort into understanding as much as we can about our products," said Dr. Hanlon.
