Dr. Norville Teaches the Value of Perserverance and Proper Diet
Pictured are Dr. Al Norville and his wife, Bess.
Dr. Al Norville was born in New Orleans in 1928 and grew up in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. His father was a chiropractor who trained and graduated from Palmer School of Chiropractic. While growing up, Dr. Norville dreamed of becoming a professional musician, not a chiropractor. After being drafted into the military, and completing an overseas tour, he decided to pursue a degree in chiropractic and enrolled in Palmer School of Chiropractic. Dr. Norville graduated in 1950 and started practicing in Jackson, Mississippi in 1951. At the age of 81, Dr. Norville still practices, plays golf four times a week (he walks all rounds, a total of 26 miles of undulating fairways per week), and enjoys playing the piano.
Struggles for Chiropractic
In 1972, Mississippi finally passed a law allowing chiropractors to adjust the spine and perform manipulations, which provided a clear path toward complementary treatments like supplements.
But the tides turned against alternative medicine soon after. Dr. Norville states, "The Mississippi Medical Association (MMA) wanted to challenge our profession's overall scope on matters of complementary modalities, including nutrition. They decided to single out one chiropractor to use as an example. They filed a lawsuit against me in 1976 because I had developed a thriving practice consisting of various complementary modalitiesÐStandard Process supplements included. Even though the judge ruled that the MMA did not have the right to question our scope, I was defeated." Mississippi's legislature did not pass an act allowing chiropractors to practice complementary modalities again until 1997.
Recognition for Dr. Boogie Woogie
Dr. Norville was recognized as the ACA's Chiropractor of the Year in 2007. He is well respected by ACA members and is often lovingly called "Dr. Boogie Woogie" because his piano playing and performing have entertained many over the years.
Leading by Example
What Dr. Norville recommends to his patients, and what he follows, is a diet containing very little meat, with the exception of fish, and eating plenty of vegetables. He feels nutritional supplementation with Standard Process products is more important than ever because "much of the food purchased in stores or prepared at restaurants has been grown far away on depleted soil." He supports Standard Process' way of processing, which uses low-temperature, high-vacuum drying to help preserve nutrients.
Dr. Norville believes Catalyn®, containing bovine and ovine organs, is an amazing supplement, with many vitamins and trace minerals, along with necessary enzymes. Dr. Weston Price, Dr. Royal Lee, and others showed that organ meats and vegetables are the most nutritionally dense foods. Catalyn has never been more important than today."
Thank you, Dr. Norville, for paving the way for the acceptance of chiropractic and alternative medicine.
