Whole Food Philosophy/Food Synergy

Intake of some dietary components may influence the health effects of others.

A large case-control study of older adults in Hong Kong suggests that various combinations of food, drink, and smoking have differential effects on health outcomes, in this case mortality. The authors conclude that some dietary components modify the effects of others. They propose adoption of a research framework that explicitly recognizes the complementary and synergistic effects of food, drinks, and smoking on health outcomes.

Limitations of the reductionist approach to studying nutrition in health: A different perspective.

The limitations of the reductionist approach to studying nutrition in health may have negative consequences on the attitudes of consumers toward using nutritional supplements, according to the authors. Disappointing results from recent intervention trials have raised questions about the importance of certain nutrients in supporting health. These negative findings often result from an overly reductionist approach to studying and understanding nutrition and health relationships, a fact which hampers public health efforts to get consumers to adopt healthy nutrition behaviors.

Clinical Nutritional Therapies and Theories

Moderate exercise may offset the triglyceride spike that occurs after a high carbohydrate meal.

30 minutes of brisk walking daily may help offset the increase in post-meal triglyceride levels that comes from consuming more dietary carbohydrate in lieu of fat. This illustrates the synergy between nutrition and exercise.

Ingredient Specific Research

A review of label claims on foods and supplements.

Most consumers and even some clinicians lack an understanding of the legal requirements, regulatory processes, and scientific evaluation standards that affect label statements on foods and nutritional supplements. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates labeling on such products based on three kinds of health-related statements: health claims, structure/function claims, and nutrient content claims. This summary is provided to offer a concise overview of the regulations surrounding such claims to clinicians to foster a greater understanding about how regulatory factors affect product labeling. Authors: "By understanding the regulatory framework behind label statements and claims, health care professionals can better assist their patients and clients in making informed decisions."
