Retrospective Case Series Reports Healthy Lipid Profiles and Weight In Chiropractic Patients Using Clinical Purification Program
PALMYRA, Wisconsin (November 21, 2008)–In a recent retrospective case series published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Chiropractic Medicine, a nutritional purification program emphasizing fruit and vegetable consumption, calorie restriction, and nutritional supplements, had a beneficial effect on serum lipids and weight in 28 chiropractic patients.
In the past, practitioners using this purification program, developed by Standard Process Inc.® for nutritional support, have noticed a possible beneficial effect of the program on serum lipids and weight. Consequently, James P. Powell, D.C., published author and past president of the Ohio State Chiropractic Examining Board and Joe Leonard, M.S., coordinator of special projects at Standard Process, performed a retrospective analysis of patient records to compare to these anecdotal observations. They retrospectively examined the de-identified medical records of 28 chiropractic patients who had completed the purification program in the two years prior to the analysis while receiving chiropractic care at the Powell Chiropractic Clinic (Canton, Ohio). The retrospective case series noted clinically significant beneficial changes in serum lipids and weight in these patients after they had completed the program.
This retrospective analysis suggests a nutritional purification program emphasizing fruit and vegetable consumption with caloric restriction and supplements administered under the guidance of a trained health care professional has beneficial effects on serum lipids and weight, however, it does not establish the independent contribution of either the dietary or supplement components standing alone.
"We knew from anecdotal clinician reports that many patients show improvement in serum lipids and body weight as a result of purification," Leonard said. "But with Dr. Powell's data, we were able to validate these effects by reviewing the documentation in the patient files. These records report the results of this program after 21 days. Hopefully, when patients experience these benefits, they will be more motivated to continue making positive lifestyle changes and incorporate better nutritional practices. That way they can reduce their health risks over longer periods of time."
Chiropractors regularly encourage overall health and well-being by counseling and providing preventive lifestyle and nutritional guidance to their patients. Diets rich in fruits and vegetables reduce the risk for some diseases, yet public health promotion efforts aimed at increasing fruit and vegetable consumption have not been very successful. Chiropractic clinics and other health care settings are a medium for targeting these messages and interventions at the people who need them most.
