| Pet Food Recall |
Tom Cameron, DVM
Due to the recent pet food recall and concern for pet health, there have been many questions on which Standard Process Veterinary Formulas might support the health of pets that could have been exposed to this pet food. As the primary health findings have been related to kidney and liver health, nutritional support of those two organ systems recommended.
For Dogs: Canine Renal Support™ - provides nutritional support at the cellular level, and supports normal regeneration and normalized function. It also provides secondary hepatic support. Dose according to label instructions by body weight. Initially, give once a day for the first 3 days, then twice daily for 60 days. Reevaluate at that time and continue as needed.
Canine Hepatic Support™ - helps normalize liver functions, and supports detoxification pathways. It also provides secondary renal support. Dose according to label directions by body weight. Initially, give once daily for 3 days, then twice daily for 60 days. Reevaluate at that time and continue as needed.
For Cats: Feline Renal Support™ - give 1 tablet once daily for 3 days, and then 1 tablet every 12 hours for 60 days. Reevaluate at that time and continue as needed.
Feline Hepatic Support™ - give 1 tablet once daily for 3 days, and then 1 tablet every 12 hours for 60 days. Reevaluate at that time and continue as needed.
If there is any suspicion of exposure to contaminated foods, or kidney or liver stress, nutritional supplementation is recommended for a minimum of 8 weeks. Pay attention to healthy kidney and liver function parameters (BUN, Creatine, Phosphorus, urine specific gravity, ALT, Bilirubin, GTT) to evaluate organ function and response to treatment.
