Meet Our Research Team

David Barnes, PhD

David Barnes, PhD

Research Director

Dr. Barnes studied animal science at the University of California at Davis where he earned his MS and PhD. From 1990 to 1995, he was a senior research fellow at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences in North Carolina where he studied toxicology in marine animals and the role minerals play in insulin-regulated metabolism.

In 1995, Dr. Barnes took an assistant professor position at the University of Arkansas where he earned the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, awarded to the top 60 young scientists in the United States each year, for his research on the interrelationship between mercury and insulin.

In 1999, Dr. Barnes joined the faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Madison to study the multi-drug resistance proteins involved in the detoxification mechanisms of the gut in humans and birds. He has also been active in studying the mechanism of action of dietary phenolic compounds on cholesterol metabolism.

Dr. Barnes' interests in the synergistic effects of food constituents led him to accept the position of Director of Research & Development at Standard Process in 2004. In this role, Dr. Barnes is responsible for providing scientific evidence-based research for Standard Process products.

Paul Hanlon, PhD

Paul Hanlon, PhD

Manager of Discovery Science

Dr. Hanlon graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1998 with a BS in Zoology. He again graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2003 with a PhD in Molecular Toxicology. Dr. Hanlon's doctoral work focused on the molecular mechanisms by which dioxin, an environmental contaminant, affected the development of fat cells.

Dr. Hanlon also held a research fellowship at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) in Durham, North Carolina, from 2003 to 2005, where he studied the cardio-protective effects of erythropoietin.

Dr. Hanlon's desire to continue working in the laboratory led him to accept the position of Manager of Discovery Science at Standard Process in May of 2005. Here, he and his team conduct experiments using sophisticated in vitro models to study the biological effects of whole foods. In 2008, Dr. Hanlon became a Diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology, a self-sustaining not-for-profit corporation that encourages the study of the science of toxicology.

Elaine Paterson, PhD

Elaine Paterson, PhD

Manager of Clinical Research

Dr. Paterson studied Medical Microbiology and Immunology in the United Kingdom prior to completing Graduate Diplomas in Mammalian Physiology (Distinction) and Monogastric Nutritional Sciences (human and animal) from Massey University, New Zealand. She completed her PhD at the University of Otago, New Zealand investigating the effect of selenium supplementation on markers of oxidant stress and antioxidant status in a smoking population.

As a post-doctoral researcher at the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, Dr. Paterson researched vitamin E metabolism and kinetics in smokers and non-smokers, and the efficacy of high-selenium broccoli on growth and development of cancer cell lines. Dr. Paterson has also managed two human research studies in the United Kingdom investigating the effect of fruit and vegetable intake from soups and juices on carotenoid status and markers of cardiovascular risk factors, and fruit and vegetable juice concentrates on phytochemical bioavailability, antioxidant status, and vasodilation.

Dr. Paterson's academic experience includes Senior Lecturer and Program Manager for a Nutritional Sciences degree offered to Nutritional Therapists through the Institute for Optimum Health in London, UK. Most recently, she has managed studies in both the UK and United States, investigating novel molecular biology-based biomarkers for selenium status. Dr. Paterson has extensive experience in human intervention and clinical study design and management, human ethics requirements, analytical and statistical data analysis, and has co-authored peer-reviewed articles and a government report.

Dr. Paterson, a dual New Zealand and British citizen and a permanent resident of the United States, joined Standard Process in 2008 as Manager of Clinical Research.

Brandon Metzger, PhD

Brandon Metzger, PhD

Research Scientist

Dr. Metzger graduated from Northern Michigan University in 1998 with a BS in Biochemistry. Before joining Standard Process in 2000 as a laboratory scientist, Dr. Metzger worked for two years in the development of echocardiography and MRI contrast agents in the biotechnology industry.

In the fall of 2002, Dr. Metzger enrolled in the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Nutritional Science PhD program where he studied in the Department of Animal Science. His work focused on evidence-based research of nutritional supplement ingredients for the prevention of cardiovascular disease. He also published research on hypocholesterolemic buckwheat protein fraction, anti-inflammatory carrot polyacetylenes, and modulation of serum lipids with nutritional supplements.

In 2008, Dr. Metzger received a PhD in Nutritional Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he had the opportunity to work under faculty advisor Dr. David Barnes, who later joined Standard Process as Director of Research & Development.

Degreed Scientists, Authors, Researchers, and Interns

Standard Process takes great pride in the comprehensive collaboration of talents featured in our department of research and development. In addition to our degreed scientists and authors, the department boasts several highly skilled research specialists who provide extensive contributions to our detailed understanding of the underlying biochemical components, physiological activities, and health applications of whole food supplements. Moreover, in following with our commitment to funding education, our department of research and development provides undergraduate internships so that students have an opportunity to gain experience in the field of cell biology. Through these internships, undergraduates get hands-on experience with state-of-the-art instruments, as well as experience in conducting sophisticated experiments. Forging new relationships with researchers-in-training provides Standard Process the opportunity of potential new hires and future collaborators.
